Born 09.04.1934, Pyhäjärvi Finland
Veijo K. Epailys

Died Setptember 29, 2020, Kärsämäki Finland

Vejio K. Epailys, 86, died on the 29th of September 2020 of natural causes in Kärsämäki Finland nearby the place he was born.

Veijo immigrated to the USA in 1961 with his childhood sweetheart Elma E. (Junno) Epailys, whom he met in Kärsämäki Finland in 1955 and married in 1961. Shortly after arriving in the USA, Veijo was hired as a maintenance mechanic with Digital Equipment Corporation and eventually progressed thru the ranks and retired as a master machinist after over forty years’ service. He participated in many projects that contributed to the success of that company.

After Veijo’s retirement, he became a school bus driver and drove routes in the Town of Sudbury for at least ten years, bringing smiles to the faces of many children each morning. Veijo and Elma settled in Maynard Massachusetts in the home of Elma’s aunt, and spent their entire lives together there. Both became fluent with English and became US citizens. The couple traveled extensively throughout the USA and Canada, as well as several trips back to Finland.

After Elma’s passing Veijo decided that he wanted to spend his last years near his relations in Finland and moved back to Kärsämäki, where he has lived for the past seven years. Veijo remained very active in the Finnish community in Massachusetts, was a member of the Knights of Kaleva, a Finnish fraternal organization, and served as membership secretary for over 2 decades for that national fraternal organization.

Veijo will be remembered for his immense generosity, the time he spent with family and friends, and his wonderful sense of humor. He was a man that never left the room without leaving many smiles behind him.

Veijo and Elma had no children but are survived by his remaining siblings in Finland as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He is also grieved by his adopted families in the USA, the Duggan family of Bolton Massachusetts, and the VahaKangas-Somero/Hannu Family of Rindge New Hampshire.

Memorial gifts in memory of Veijo can be made to the Finnish American Heritage Center & Historic Archives, 601 Quincy Street, Hancock, MI 49930
