Obituary for John P. Steere IV

Hudson, MA: John P. Steere IV, 68, a longtime resident of Hudson, MA, died at Hermitage Healthcare in Worcester on Friday, April 24, 2020 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

John is survived by his siblings, Jean McNary and her husband Bill of East Dennis, Joyce Carter and her husband Phil of Leominster, Janice Steere, and Jeff Steere, both of Hudson. He was predeceased by his brother James Steere, sister Joanne Steere and sister-in-law Michele Steere. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Genevieve Steere of Lancaster along with nieces, nephews, cousins and many dear friends.

John was born in Providence, RI, son of the late John P. Steere III and Rita (Petersen) Steere. John and his family lived a short time in Millis, MA in 1957 until settling in Hudson, MA in 1961. He attended local schools and was a 1970 graduate of Hudson High. Later, after attending Quinsigamond Community College, he took courses at Wentworth Institute and became a land surveyor, working for Boston Survey Consultants in Bedford and later Stamski & McNary, Inc. of Acton.

Throughout his life, John cherished telling a good story. He looked forward to places where he could tell them: around dinner during a night out, with his circle of close friends for breakfast at a local Hudson diner, or over coffee and dessert at a family party. He was a Boston sports superfan, and he often recounted Red Sox pitching dominance and scolded the Patriots for not getting down to business on defense. For John the 60’s and 70’s was music’s golden age. If you could name the song or hum nonsense words like “Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow," he could tell you what was the B-side on the 45 or name the hit the band had the year before, all while thinking of what cassette tape he had captured it on. John’s life will live on in these stories— memories of a loving son, brother, uncle and loyal friend will live in the hearts of all who loved and knew him.

Due to the COVID-19 Virus and safety concerning social gatherings, a graveside service and urn burial in Forestvale Cemetery, Hudson, MA to celebrate John’s life will be announced as soon as permitted under the guidelines of state health officials. John’s funeral arrangements are under the thoughtful guidance of Acton Funeral Home, 470 Massachusetts Ave., Acton, MA 01720.
