Obituary for Joan M. (Coughlin) Cogan

Joan M. (Coughlin) Cogan, 85, a longtime Maynard resident, died peacefully Friday, March 5, 2021. The beloved wife of the late James A. "Jim" Cogan, she is survived by their 5 children: Laura Cogan, James Cogan and wife Jill, Kevin Cogan and wife Kirsten, Michael Cogan and companion Kristina Sobel, and Brian Cogan and wife Jennifer; 10 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and extended family.

Born in Boston, she was the daughter of the late William and Mary (Cullinane) Coughlin, and was also predeceased by her brothers, William and Albert Coughlin. Mrs. Cogan grew up in Arlington and was a graduate of St. Agnes Elementary School, Notre Dame de Namur in Cambridge, and attended the Cambridge City Hospital School of Nursing. She worked part-time at Woolworth's while in school, met her husband Jim, and the couple married in 1956. They lived in Harvard Square for a time before moving to Arlington and later to Maynard where they raised their family.

Mrs. Cogan especially loved time spent at the ocean, and with her cousins, the Lyons family. As a child she went to Revere Beach and later the family enjoyed annual vacations on Nantucket. She worked the school lunch program for a time, and liked to attend Mass at St. Bridget's Church in Maynard.

All are invited to visiting hours on Sunday, March 7th from 3:00-5:00pm at the Acton Funeral Home, 470 Massachusetts Ave (Rte 111) Acton. Masks are required and social distancing will be observed. The funeral Mass and burial in Glenwood Cemetery, Maynard, are private due to COVID capacity regulations.
