Obituary for Irene Lavery

Irene Lavery, a loving and beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away peacefully at UMASS Memorial Hospital in Worcester on March 30, 2023, surrounded by family after a long, hard-fought illness.

Irene was born in July of 1949 while her Scottish parents were working in Manchester, England. After losing both parents as a baby, Irene was raised back in Carfin, Scotland by her grandmother and Aunts who became her loving sisters. She is survived by her soulmate, John Watt Lavery, with whom she shares 53 years of devoted marriage and partnership. Irene is also survived by her two adoring sons, Jamie and John Paul Lavery as well as her daughter-in-law Diane Lavery and her two grandchildren Sebastian and Piper.

After Jamie was born in Scotland in 1976, Irene and John spent some time in Ireland following John's career at Digital Equipment Corporation. Digital relocated them back to Scotland in 1979 where John Paul was born shortly after in 1980. The family were then on the move again with Digital to the south of France, spending 5 fulfilling years that Irene always fondly reminisced over.

Irene and family moved to Acton in 1989 and chose to settle down after a hectic and adventurous period of their lives. Irene, who was passionate about helping others young and old, became a board member of Acton/Boxboro Youth Soccer and began volunteering in the long-term care industry. After becoming a US Citizen, Irene turned her commitment to the elderly into a full time career, culminating in a Directorship with Elder Life Enrichment here in Acton.

Irene continued to work with the elderly until her illness and was dedicated to ensuring that all individuals were treated with respect and dignity in their twilight years.

Irene will be deeply missed by her family and everyone whose life she impressed.

“When Death's dark stream I ferry o'er,
A time that surely shall come;
In Heaven itself I'll ask no more
Than just a Highland welcome.”

-Robert Burns
