Obituary for Helen Mahar ""Sheba"" Byrne

Helen Mahar Byrne (“Sheba”), 95, of Acton, formerly of Fanwood and Linden, New Jersey passed away peacefully Friday the 4th of February 2022.

Born at home in Linden to her parents John and Helen (Wagner) Mahar, Helen was a graduate of Linden High School Class of 1944. She was the beloved wife of 54 years of the late John Byrne. She enjoyed her time as a Cub Scout den mother and Brownie troop leader. After raising her two children in Fanwood, she made lifelong friends through her job at Hahne & Company. She resided in Fanwood for 60 years surrounded by wonderful neighbors.

Helen enjoyed bowling, tennis, and loved beating her grandchildren in a game of May-I. A lover of Broadway shows, she could often be found listening (loudly) to the Les Miserable soundtrack. Helen continued to have an active social life well into her eighties, including monthly meetings with “The Club” and vacations at the Jersey Shore. She had a quick wit and was known to offer a “knuckle sandwich” to those she thought deserved one! She was a caretaker to many and loved by all.

She is survived by her son Jack (Marie) of Clark, NJ; daughter Kerry (John Edmonds) of Acton, MA; as well as grandchildren Kyle Edmonds (Vanessa), Jason Byrne, William Edmonds, Catherine Cullen (Stu), Alexandra Byrne, and Ashley Byrne, and two great-grandchildren Kieran and Harper Cullen. She will also be dearly missed by her nieces and nephews: George (Andrea), Anne, and Tom (Karen) Meister, Jack (Jeanie), Kathy, and Cindy Mahar.

She was predeceased by her husband John, her brother Jack Mahar and his wife Agnes, John’s sisters Winifred Byrne, Catherine Meister, and Celia Byrne, as well as her nephew Bill Meister.

Visitation will be Saturday, February 12th from 9-11 am at Leonard-Lee Funeral Home, 301 E Blancke St., Linden, NJ with burial at Rosedale Memorial Park, Linden Ave., Linden, NJ. Reception to follow.

For those who wish, in lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Helen’s name to the Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research: PO Box 5014, Hagerstown, MD 21741-5014.
