Obituary for Doris R. (McIntosh) Mariani

Doris (McIntosh) Mariani, age 95, passed away on Wednesday, August 3, 2022, in the presence of her family.

Doris was born in Stoneham, MA, and spent most of her life in Maynard. In addition to having a green thumb, she loved dancing, sewing, and crafting, and she elevated her cross-stitching to an art form. She graduated from Maynard High School, and during the war years, she worked for Raytheon. Later on she worked in food services for many years and was the baker at Emerson Hospital, where she worked with her beloved brother, John (Happy).

She met her husband, Ed, as a teenager at the Acton dances, where they bonded over their love of ballroom dancing. They became lifelong partners, marrying in 1949. After a hiatus to raise their three children, they began dancing again regularly, traveling all around the region and making many friends along the way.

There was nothing more important in the world to Doris than her family. She loved family gatherings, trying new recipes, designing and sewing clothes and jewelry, and creating one-of-a-kind pieces of art for her family members and friends.

Doris was predeceased by her parents, Lillian Anderson and John McIntosh Sr.; her sisters, Hazel Wetherbee and Bev DeMuth; her brother, John McIntosh Jr.; her husband, Edmund Mariani; and her son-in-law, Steven Lesperance.

She is survived by her brother, Bill McIntosh, and his wife Emily Flynn, of Ashville, NC; her children, Lynn (Mariani) Lesperance of Yarmouth Port, MA, Kathy Mariani and her partner Kathy Duggan of Allenstown, NH, and Ted Mariani and his partner, Helen Duquette, of Northborough, MA; her grandchildren, Alissa Lesperance and her husband, Terry Campbell, of Portland, OR, and Nicole Lesperance and her husband, Ciaran Flynn, of Acton, MA; her great-grandchildren, Isla and Neil Flynn; and several nieces and nephews. She also leaves her daughters of the heart, Anna (Mariani) Bradley, Joanne (Way) Rogan, and Linda Rich.

A visiting hour will take place from 9:00-10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 10, at the Acton Funeral Home, 470 Massachusetts Ave (Rte 111) Acton. A funeral Mass will be celebrated that day at 11:00 a.m. at St. Bridget's Church of Ascension Parish, 1 Percival Street, Maynard. A private interment will follow at Glenwood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, anyone wishing to honor Doris' memory can make a donation in her name to the Alzheimer's Association, a cause dear to her heart: http://act.alz.org
