Obituary for David T. Smith

David T. Smith, 67, died on March 3 at CareOne of Concord, MA where he had been a resident for several years. He is survived by his loving twin brother, George Smith, of Concord, NH.

David was a beloved member of Acton Congregational Church for many years where he was often found in the front row at services and volunteering in several capacities, including as an usher, a welcomer and on the Alpha Course. He had a wonderful sense of humor, often joking about himself and giving himself nicknames like “Speedy Gonzalez” when he would wheel himself down the corridor at CareOne, leaving people “in the dust” and “The Mule” for his determination to overcome his many health challenges. He also had a big heart and was generous with the resources he had. David loved to tell the ladies how nice they looked and typically had a cheerful greeting for people he’d encounter.

Before his health declined, he was an avid hiker who loved nature and enjoyed going for flights with friends who had airplanes. Toward the end of his life, when he was dependent on others, he never failed to express his deep appreciation for any help he was given. Perhaps the saddest part of his adult life was when his beloved cat, Kiddo, died. Despite the challenges in his life, David remained upbeat and became the unofficial “welcoming ambassador” at CareOne, befriending new residents as well as visitors to the facility. David was a remarkable, memorable man and he’ll be missed by his brother and his many friends at his church and his residence.

There will be a memorial service for David on Saturday, April 24 at 11:00 AM for family and close friends. The service also will be live streamed on the church’s Facebook page. Donations in David’s memory can be sent to Acton Congregational Church, 12 Concord Road, Acton, MA 01720.
