Obituary for Anne Catherine Stevenson

Anne Catherine Stevenson of Harwich, MA passed away peacefully on Labor Day, September 5, 2022 following a brief and courageous battle with brain cancer. She was 57.

She was surrounded by what she unquestionably would tell you was her biggest joy and greatest accomplishment in life, her three beautiful, devoted children, Sam Orloff of Quincy, and Maggie and Isabelle O’Donnell of Harwich.

Anne also leaves her parents, John and Margaret Stevenson of Orange, her brother John Stevenson of Pembroke, her brother Ben Stevenson and his wife Jane of Sudbury, her sister Emily (Stevenson) Walger and her husband Mike of Swampscott, and many beloved nieces, nephews, and extended family.

It was appropriate that Anne passed on Labor Day, as she was one of the hardest workers we knew. But she also had a wide range of sometimes contrary talents and interests that made her fun, unpredictable, and interesting to be around. She was known as an exceptional conversationalist with a sharp wit and keen observational skills. She loved 19th century literature and poetry, and taught high school English, but also closely followed the Pentagon’s latest UFO reports. She was a classically trained violinist who loved Mendelssohn, and Bob Seger and Merle Haggard She studied, traveled, and taught abroad, but especially loved her home on Cape Cod. She was a talented, natural athlete who could easily sit still and lose herself in a book for an entire day.

Anne never stopped pursuing her love of knowledge. She was a lifelong student and loved to learn from the world around her. She graduated from Ralph C. Mahar High School in Orange, MA, Oberlin College and received her master’s degree from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

Most of all Anne loved her family, who all loved her and will miss her terribly. Always a gifted runner, she won many races but this is a finish line we wish she hadn’t reached so soon.

Anne’s children and family would like to especially thank Care Dimensions Hospice, particularly Michelle and Debbie, who provided such loving and compassionate support over the past several months.

Lastly, those who loved her ask that you join in celebrating Anne’s life by spending time with some of life’s greatest joys: listen to a favorite piece music, absorb the wisdom of an Emily Dickinson poem, embrace nature and stare at the possibilities represented in a clear blue sky and open yourself to the wonders and mysteries of our universe, both knowable and unknowable.

Services will be held at Ascension Parish in Sudbury on Saturday, September 17 at 11am, followed by an open house reception at 179 Mossman Road in Sudbury.
